«Love» in Japanese sounds like ai 愛. «I love you» in Japanese is aisuru す る, while in colloquial speech, men say aishiteru yo 愛 し て い る よ, women – aishiteru wa 愛 し て い る わ. But, unlike Europeans, In Japan, they do not say «I love you» often. They believe that love should be shown by actions, and it is something extremely intimate which cannot even be explained by words. But when they still express this feeling in words, they more often say suki desu 好 き で す, which means «I like you» (suki da yo 好 き だ よ says a man, suki da wa き だ わ says a woman).
In Japanese culture, there is also the word koi 恋 (to love – koisuru す る). Both koi and ai mean love, but there is a slight difference between them. Koi is love for the other person, human lust, while ai is not only romantic love but love in general: towards a person, motherland, nature, a party, etc. Koi is a romantic love that can be selfish, associated with desire; ai is true love with the desire to give. There is also the word ren’ai which also means romantic love:
恋愛 結婚 – renai-kekkon – marriage based on love
見 合 い 結婚 – miai-kekkon – the marriage of convenience
恋愛 小説 – renai-shousetsu – a love story, short romance
何時 ま で も 愛 す る – itsumademo aisuru – eternal love.
