Our brain is likely to adopt a natural tendency to develop a mental pattern and routine to limit information, which is called neural pruning, this can be overcome by using higher-order thinking questions in a teaching program, which can effectively strengthen the brains capacity to think more and become open-minded, in other words, higher-order thinking questions will promote neural branching.
Researchers have found seven types of questions that will come under the criteria of higher-order thinking questions through which you can effectively promote one’s efficiency to think more.
1. Hypothetical questions- the question that promotes students to create new information out of a generalized situation, for example, what if it happened?
2. Reversal thinking. It just promotes the ability of students to turn around the question and wonder the backward scenarios of a particular situation. For example, they can ask questions like, what will happen if the opposite of particular thing happens.
3. Introducing students to different symbol system. It’s a fun part where they can learn symbolize different stuff like you can ask them to write a math questions, this can make them creative and eliminate the traditional way of the king or answering the questions.
4. Analogy. They basically make them compare unrelated things or situations and engage their capacity of thinking.
5. Analysis. It basically means that students will learn to analyze other people’s thoughts, beliefs to extend their minds.
6. Completion. It’s one of the interesting ways to promote higher-order thinking capacity, in this task you ask the students to complete an unfinished task, for example, you can give them a story without the end and ask them to make their own ending of that particular story. This will surely make them think and come up with something interesting and completely unique.
7. Web analysis. In these types of questions, students would need to compare related tasks and come up with a generalized answer rather than stating facts!
Q3.Here some ways through which teachers can promote high order thinking.
1. Connecting different concepts. You will have to make your students able to connect concepts and make them think out of the box.
2. Promote infer. Teachers will have to think a way by which they can make students infer and make assumptions of a particular situation.
3. Question. In order to achieve high order thinking you will have to make them able to question every aspect of the knowledge you are providing them.
4. Problem-solving. Teach them step by step methods to solve problems so that they can learn how to solve problems in an easy way.
